Key points

Key takeaways

  • Compare the cost of ownership, not just the starting price.
  • Check payments, deliveries and ERP integrations with a real scenario.
  • For a migration, prepare a URL map and a post-launch check.
In this article

WooCommerce and Shopify can both support a successful online store, but they shift responsibilities differently. With WooCommerce you manage the WordPress environment and the integrations; Shopify provides a hosted platform with its own terms and capabilities. The decision should reflect the catalog and operations, not a personal preference for a given system.

Short answer

Choose after testing the real scenarios: products and variants, payments, couriers, invoicing, ERP, languages, SEO URLs and content management. Work out at least a year of total costs for the platform, apps, hosting, development and maintenance. If you are migrating, include the risk to URLs and data.

Cost: initial quote versus cost of ownership

For WooCommerce, compare hosting, development, paid extensions, updates, security and the person who maintains the store. For Shopify, check the plan, the apps, the fees depending on the payment solution, the integrations and any custom development. Providers' prices and terms change, so get current quotes for your case instead of a table of universal amounts.

Integrations in Bulgaria: check specifically

Make a table of your payment and delivery providers, warehouse system, invoicing, returns and marketing tools. For each scenario, note whether there is a ready-made solution, what exactly it does and who maintains the integration. "There is an app" does not prove that it handles your specific rules for cash on delivery, stock or documents.

Catalog, content and SEO

Test variants, filters, categories, out-of-stock products and multilingual setup with real sample records. Check which URLs are created, how the canonical signals work and whether you can build useful standalone categories. If the store already has organic traffic, inventory the URLs before migrating. See our guide to SEO for categories and filters.

How to decide without an expensive wrong choice

  1. Describe ten critical scenarios for the store.
  2. Build a trial catalog with real variants, deliveries and payments.
  3. Estimate the cost and resources for maintenance over 12–24 months.
  4. Check who owns the data and how it is exported.
  5. For a migration, test the product URLs and the redirects.

For moving between platforms, the official instructions from Shopify and Google are important sources for the specific steps.

When to look for a contractor

If you have complex integrations or an existing catalog with organic traffic, ask for a technical specification and a migration plan before choosing a platform. See our approach to online store development and our published migration example; the case study shows a type of work and does not promise the same result for every store.

After choosing the platform, compare the specific scope too: the checklist for online store quotes covers integrations, rights and acceptance tests.
