Link Building: When It Makes Sense and How to Assess the Quality of a Publication

When link building is useful for the business and how to assess the relevance, editorial quality and risks of an external publication.

If the site has no clear pages for its services or technical obstacles are blocking its important URLs, buying publications is rarely the first sensible SEO task. External links have their place when they send real readers to content that deserves to be found.

Short answer

Assess a publication by audience, topical connection to the business, quality of the text, editorial independence and the exact context of the link. Do not accept the number of links or a single "authority" metric as proof that the campaign is working.

Check whether link building is the next priority

Do a short audit: are the important services indexed, do they answer the customer's real questions and are there clear internal links? If the answer is "no", fix the site first. An external link to a weak or irrelevant page will not explain the service for you. A useful starting point is how to prioritize the recommendations from an SEO audit.

Separate the goals: access to a new audience, reputation in a specific sector, visits from relevant sites and support for discoverability. These goals are measured differently.

Seven signs of a good external publication

  1. The outlet has a real audience that may be interested in the topic.
  2. The article answers a question on which the site has credible expertise.
  3. The publication's authorship, contact details and editorial standard are visible.
  4. The link leads to a specific useful page and is not added mechanically.
  5. The text contains original information or an expert contribution, not rewritten advertising copy.
  6. If the piece is paid or sponsored, the link is labeled in line with the applicable guidelines.
  7. You can explain why you would want this publication even without a promise of an SEO effect.

Which signals are suspicious?

Identical texts across many sites, publications with no recognizable topical audience, directories with unrelated topics, guarantees of first place and a report with only a link count all deserve further questions. Also watch whether the contractor is selling a specific result from an algorithm it does not control. Google describes the requirements for paid links and abuses in its spam policies.

What a useful report should look like

Ask for a list of published URLs, the topic and reasoning for each choice, the target page, referral visits, observations on audience fit and editorial lessons learned. Organic rankings can change for many reasons; do not attribute every rise to one publication. Compare the results with the technical and content changes on the site.

When the approach may look different

For a local business, a useful mention may come from a real partnership in the region; for a B2B provider, from a trade publication with a genuine technical contribution. Neither strategy comes down to buying identical pieces from a list.

When discussing link building with DigitaL+, clarify which services, markets and editorial sources make sense for your business and what we would publish under our own name.

What to ask for before publication

Have the contractor explain who will write the piece, who will edit it and why the publication's audience would read it. Ask for a topic and a sample outline, not just the publication's URL and an upload deadline. Check whether the piece will remain accessible, whether sponsorship is clearly labeled and whether a factual error can be corrected.

What to do instead of mass publications

Prepare real expert information that another site can use: a measured process, a technical explanation, a useful tool or a valid comment on a topic your team works on. Not every such publication needs to lead to a link. Its value may also lie in reaching the right people and in a verifiable mention of the company.

If a specific piece has no standalone value for the reader, put it off. Adding one more link is not a good reason to publish a weak text.
