Key points

Key takeaways

  • Google Search captures active intent, while Meta often creates demand and discovery.
  • Channels should be compared using the same downstream conversion definition.
  • Creative capacity, landing-page quality and measurement readiness are part of the channel choice.
In this article

Google Ads and Meta Ads solve different parts of the customer journey. Google Search is especially strong when the user is already looking for a solution. Meta is strong for demand generation, visual discovery, retargeting and scaling through a creative system. For many businesses the right answer is not "either/or" but a clear role for both channels.

Short answer

Choose Google Ads if there is enough active search demand with commercial intent. Choose Meta Ads if you need to create demand, the product is visual or creative testing is the main growth lever. Combine them when you have tracking and a budget that allow you to measure the whole funnel.

The main difference is intent

With Google Search the user states their need. With Meta the advertiser reaches a person based on audience, behavior, context and the platform's models before the person has necessarily typed a query.

Creative dependenceMedium for Search, high for YouTube/DisplayVery high

When we would start with Google Ads

  • There is measurable demand for the product or service.
  • The queries have clear commercial intent.
  • The landing page can answer the search directly.
  • We can measure conversion and downstream quality.

For a B2B service we often start with Search campaigns around high-intent groups rather than a broad set of generic keywords. The goal is to understand which searches lead to a qualified opportunity, not simply what brings a cheap form submit.

When we would start with Meta Ads

  • The product or offer can be demonstrated visually.
  • The market is not actively searching for the category, but there is a clear audience.
  • There is capacity for continuous creative testing.
  • We can use CRM/eCommerce data as feedback to the campaigns.

Meta should not be managed through "interests" alone. Modern account strategy relies on a strong offer, creative diversity, reliable event data and enough volume for learning.

The most important question: what do you call a conversion?

If Google Ads brings 40 forms and Meta 60, that does not mean Meta is "better". In lead generation we need to link the ad source to a qualified lead, meeting, opportunity or sale. In eCommerce we need to look at revenue, margin and new-customer value, not just platform ROAS.

This is exactly where Analytics & Tracking is part of performance marketing, not an extra technical task.

A sample decision framework

  1. Demand: is there enough active search demand?
  2. Economics: what CPA/CAC can the business sustain?
  3. Creative: do we have the resources for a constant supply of assets?
  4. Landing page: can it convert the traffic?
  5. Measurement: can we see lead quality and revenue?
  6. Volume: does the budget allow real learning?

When the combination is stronger

Meta can create awareness and demand, while Google Search captures users who later search for the category or the brand. Google can bring high-intent visitors whom Meta then retargets through a longer decision cycle. That is why channel attribution has to be read carefully.

In a combined strategy we define the role of each channel before launch: acquisition, demand generation, retargeting, branded defense, launch or retention. Otherwise the two teams can optimize toward different goals and both look successful without the business growing.

How to compare results fairly

  • Use the same conversion definition.
  • Compare by downstream quality where possible.
  • Separate branded from non-branded demand.
  • Monitor incrementality and overlap at larger budgets.
  • Check tracking before blaming bidding or targeting.
The best channel is not the one with the lowest CPC. It is the channel that, at your economics, creates the most quality business results and can be scaled.
For execution, see Google Ads, Meta Ads and Performance Marketing.

If you are also considering a video channel, first check the conditions for a test: when TikTok advertising is a good fit for the business.

DigitaL+ practice

How we apply the principle in practice

In the new DigitaL+ content graph, Google Ads, Meta Ads and Performance Marketing remain separate commercial entities, but all link to Analytics & Tracking and lead-quality content. This is deliberate: the channel is the execution layer, and the business outcome is validated in a shared measurement layer.
